The light attracts plankton, which in turn attracts the huge manta rays. Divers, equipped with night lamps, dive down to the floor of the ocean about 35 feet down. Once settled at the bottom, all divers point their lights up towards the surface. This is a night dive that is almost more like a show than a real dive. One of the most famous dives you can do in the Big Island is the Manta Ray Dive. We knew we would be diving in a couple hours so we didn't want to eat too much. We only had ~30 hours in Kailua-Kona, but we managed to squeeze in quite a bit!Īfter arriving at the airport in Kailua-Kona in the morning, we headed to our hotel to drop off our luggage before stopping by a poke shack for a quick and delicious lunch. This would save us hours of driving time. We actually arranged our flights so that we would fly into Kailua-Kona (west side) and fly out of Hilo, the airport on the east side of the island. It's a huge island (no surprise!) and most travel guides recommend treating the west side of the island (Kailua-Kona) as a separate destination from Volcano National Park, which is more on the east side of the island. We will however offer to bring your party back out on the boat another night, when space is available. The island of Hawai'i is best known for its gorgeous diving sites, world famous Kona coffee, and the active volcano on the island. No refunds will be given for non-sightings, no exceptions. While we see mantas 90+% of the time, they are wild animals in the ocean and their appearance and movement is beyond our control. No Manta Policy: We do NOT guarantee mantas. We do provide a dry storage area for these belongings. Personal valuables such as cameras and cell phones are welcomed and encouraged on board but at your own risk. When you return to the boat, you will enjoy a warm, fresh water shower, and warm beverage of your choosing (hot cocoa or tea) + snacks. Our crew, who are all lifeguard/CPR certified, will be in the ocean with you. We approach each manta ray swim tour with your safety and enjoyment as our highest priority, adapting our tours to reflect this. It is exhilarating to be in the ocean at night on a snorkel with the Kona mantas. We will use our custom built lightboards to attract plankton, providing a rich bounty of which mantas may feed. Whenever possible, we tie off directly to the back of the boat so swimming is minimized and you can easily enjoy the incredible show the mantas put on. ![]() ![]() Sometimes referred to as the “butterflies of the sea,” mantas are completely harmless they have no teeth, stingers, or barbs. ![]() On this nighttime Kona Manta Ray snorkeling adventure, we will be floating on the surface as we watch mantas dance below us.
